Lacrosse Drops Season Opener on the Road

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - George Mason (0-1) opened up its 2006 season with a 13-6 loss to No. 9 Maryland (2-1) at the Lacrosse and Field Hockey Complex in College Park, Md.

Mason fell behind 5-1 in the first half before a goal by junior Melissa Curry with 38 seconds remaining cut the deficit to three heading into halftime. Curry also had two assists in the game for a total of three points.

After the break both teams exchanged goals as Maryland's Casey Magor scored at 26:31 and senior Sarah Bryant found the back of the net for Mason a mere 27 seconds later. After Bryant's goal, the Terrapin attack took control of the game, scoring seven of the next eight goals to make the score 13-4 before two late scores by junior Melissa Venturi led to the final tally of 13-6.

Both Bryant and Venturi led Mason with two goals apiece. Senior Delia Cox led the Maryland attack with five goals in the game, three coming off free position shots. The Terrapins were 4-7 in the game on free position shots.

The Patriots will look to get in the win column on Friday, March 3 when they face the Virginia Tech Hokies at 7 p.m. at George Mason Stadium.
