Box Score

Conway, S.C. - The George Mason baseball team made it two straight wins on Saturday, as the Patriots took a rare win at Coastal Carolina, downing the Chanticleers, 5-3. Freshmen Spencer Wiggins, Scott Kreiger and Ryan Uphouse each had two hits and senior Brent Hitz went six innings to earn his first win of the season.

Mason scored all of its runs in the first three innings and then held off Coastal Carolina's rally. In the second, Uphouse and Tyler Youngs had back-to-back one-out singles to put runners on the corners and Brent Weiss' sacrifice fly put the Patriots on the board. Youngs went to second on the play and he scored on Wiggins' single. Wiggins scored on a Robby Jacobsen single to make it 3-0.

In the third, Mason (2-3) scored the remainder of its runs. Kreiger led off with a single and Matt Barrett was hit by a pitch to put two men on base. Uphouse's single loaded the bases and Kreiger scored on a Youngs fielder's choice. Brent Weiss reached on an error to plate Barrett before Jacobsen struck out with the bases loaded to end the inning.

Coastal (1-3) made it 5-1 in the third with a lead-off single and double. In the fifth, back-to-back two-out solo homers made it 5-3. That's all Hitz allowed as he went six innings, allowing six hits and one walk while striking out four. Phil Stone pitched two hitless innings and Jason Mills worked a scoreless ninth to pick up his first save of the year.

Mason will have a chance to top .500 on Sunday when the Patriots take on Pittsburgh at 11 a.m. and Coastal Carolina at 2:30 p.m.
