Wrestling in the 133-pound consolation bracket, George Mason redshirt sophomore Will Powars lost his first match of the second day of action by a score of 11-7 to Chattanooga's Josh Keefe at the 2006 Southern Scuffle wrestling tournament hosted by UNC Greensboro at Greensboro Coliseum's War Memorial Auditorium. The loss eliminated Powars from the tournament.
Powars, who was the Patriots only remaining wrestler in the tournament, advanced in the consolation bracket on the opening day of the two-day tournament. Powars dropped a close 3-2 decision to Eric Albright of the University of Virginia to begin the day. After the loss, Powars strung together three consecutive victories to remain alive for the final day of competition. He defeated VMI's Tyler Anthony 3-1 in his first match in the consolation bracket, then dispatched of Pittsburgh's Zach Bowman by major decision (10-1) and Lock Haven's Danny Lopes by decision (4-3).
In the team scoring after one full day of action, No. 2 Minnesota collected a total of 59.5 points and holds a small lead over Edinboro, which sits in second with 53.5 total points. Cornell (52), top-ranked Missouri (50.5) and California State - Bakersfield (42.5) round out the top five. George Mason was in 21st place with 20.5 team points after the first day of competition.
This year's scuffle features four top-ranked individuals in the USA Today/InterMat/NWCA Division I Coaches Poll. Minnesota's Dustin Schlatter and Cole Konrad along with Missouri's brother tandem of Ben and Max Askren each hold the nation's No. 1 spot in their respective weight classes.
Today's action will conclude with the championship finals, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. George Mason will wrestle again on Saturday, Jan. 6 at the Virginia Intercollegiate State Championships in Norfolk, Va.
