Fairfax, Va.--Junior Tom Koucheravy (Fairfax, Va.) can be found in the Jan. 9 issue of Sports Illustrated in the `Faces in the Crowd' for his outstanding performance at the Patriot Invitational Nov. 18-20, 2005. Koucheravy is just the second Mason athlete to be featured in this section in the past three years.
Koucheravy won three events during the Invitational also setting new school and meet records in each event: the 500-yard freestyle (4:22.79), the 200 freestyle (1:39.27), and the 1,650 freestyle (15:09.35). The former Robinson High School swimmer's times in the 500 free and 1,650 free were new NCAA `B' cuts, while his 1,000 free (9:11.47) and 1,650 free were new CAA records. Notably, Koucheravy's time in the 1,650 freestyle broke the pool record, which had been previously set by two-time Olympic Champion, Tom Dolan in December 1999, while training for the 2000 Olympic Trials in Fairfax.
In addition to being featured in SI, Koucheravy has also received the following honors: CAA Male Swimmer of the Week (Dec. 7, 2005, Nov. 22, 2005, Feb. 8, 2005), CAA Men's Swimmer of the Year (2004-05), Outstanding Male Swimmer of the CAA Championships (2005), CAA Male Swimmer of the Week (Feb. 8, 2005), and CAA Rookie of the Year (2003-04).
