Over the past 15 years, no team has won more games in Major League Baseball than the Atlanta Braves. John Schuerholz has been the architect of that dynasty, serving as the team's general manager for all 15 of those seasons. Now, a former George Mason student-athlete holds a seat of power just below Schuerholz, as Dayton Moore was promoted to the position of Assistant General Manager/Baseball Operations on Tuesday.
Moore, 38, joined the Braves organization in 1994 and most recently served as Director of Player Personnel, a position he filled in 2002.
"The remarkable success of our organization the past 15 years has been the result of contributions made by key personnel," said Schuerholz, who also has the title of Executive Vice President. "This promotion recognizes the excellent work that Dayton has done in the Scouting and Player Development departments and the high regard we have for his administrative skills. I am extremely fortunate to work with two top baseball executives like Dayton Moore and Frank Wren (Vice President/Assistant General Manager) in the operation of the Braves organization."
Once upon a time, Moore set a single-season school record for the Patriots, competing in 62 games in 1988, the year Mason advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history. Moore still shares that record, for games played in a season, with Ralph Schmidt and Rod Billingsley. Moore batted .254 that season and then hit .307 the following year, his last with Mason.
Moore originally joined the Braves staff as a scouting supervisor for the Mid-Atlantic states and was promoted to the front office in August 1996 as an assistant in the Baseball Operations Department. In November of 1996, he was named Assistant Director of Scouting. In 1999, Moore worked added the title of Assistant Director of Player Development. In 2000, he became Director of International Scouting, a role he filled until he was named Director of Player Personnel two years later.
