FAIRFAX, Va. (Aug. 15, 2005) - Former George Mason track standout Maurice Wignall (1997-2000) placed seventh in the finals of the 110-meter hurdles Friday, Aug. 12, at the 2005 International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championships, held Aug. 6-14 in Helsinki, Finland.
Wignall, a 2004 Olympic finalist and two-time Jamaican National Champion in the 110m hurdles, completed the race in 13.47 seconds. France's Ladji Doucoure won the event with a time of 13.07.
Other former athletes with ties to Mason competed at this year's World Championships, including Brandon Simpson (2001-02), who captured a bronze medal as a member of Jamaica's third-place 4x400-meter relay team that clocked in at a season-best time of 2:58.07. Simpson also ran in the finals of the 400m dash, where he placed sixth (45.01). Former Patriot Allen Simms (2001-02), who saw action in the triple jump as a member of Puerto Rico's delegation, jumped 16.63m in the preliminaries and missed out on advancing to the finals by .03 meters.
On the women's side, former standout Cydonie Mothersill (1998-99), running for the Cayman Islands, finished eighth in the finals of the 200-meter dash (23.00).
