George Mason University golfer Nick DeSimone (Sykesville, Md/Liberty) earned a spot in the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. DeSimone qualified after shooting 70-72-142 and finishing in second place at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va last week at a Public Links qualifier.
He joins women's golf standout Michelle Wie as one of 156 players set to play at Shaker Run Golf Club in Lebanon, Ohio, July 11-16. The championship includes 36 holes of stroke play to get the field down to 64 golfers. After that, the overall champion, who earns a spot in next year's Masters, will be determined by match-play rounds.
This past season, Nick DeSimone participated in nine of ten tournaments as a sophomore. He finished third on the team in scoring, averaging 75.9 strokes per round. He was a top 20 finisher in two tournaments, placing seventh at the Sea Trail Intercollegiate (73-71-144) and 16th at the Pirate Fall Intercollegiate (75-73-71) 219. He Recorded a low 69 at the Rutherford Invitational, the last tournament of the season.
The U.S. Amateur Public Links is open to any bona fide public-course player whose USGA Handicap Index does not exceed 8.4.
