Fairfax, Va.--George Mason University's softball team (20-28) fell to Mount St. Mary's (12-29) in the first game of the twinbill by a score of 3-1 Tuesday afternoon, but went on to claim a 2-1 victory in the nightcap at George Mason Field. In between games, senior shortstop Stacy James (Leesburg, Va.) was the lone Patriot on the squad to be honored for her contributions to the Mason softball program.
In the opening game, James connected on her second homerun of the season in the bottom of the third inning to give Mason a 1-0 lead. The Mount answered with a tying run in the top of the fifth as junior Kathleen Housman crossed home plate for MSM after sophomore Ashley Monsour hit a triple to right field. The game was sent into extra innings and The Mount scored two runs and Mason came up short in the bottom of the eighth to lose the game, 3-1.
Sophomore Megan Farrell (Medford, N.J.) was on the mound the entire game for the Patriots and gave up one earned run off of six hits, while walking four and striking two of the 37 batters she faced. Sophomore Reanna Tuczynski claimed the win as she pitched all eight innings and gave up one earned run off of seven hits, while striking out 33 of the Patriots she faced at the plate.
James reached first on a fielder's choice in her first at-bat in the second contest and made it to second with her 14th stolen base of the 2005 campaign. Farrell connected on a double to right field, which drove James in to put the Patriots on the board with a 1-0 lead. The Mount tied the game in the top of the sixth inning as Housman scored after senior Mary Dillon hit a single to left field. With bases loaded, one out and a full-count, Farrell smacked one to right field in the seventh to drive in the game-winning run for Mason's 20th win of the season.
Freshman hurler Amber Straube (Virginia Beach, Va.) earned the win as she pitched all seven innings for Mason and gave up one run off of six hits, while walking one and striking out three batters. Junior Maria Lutz collected the loss as she gave up two earned runs off of 10 hits, while striking out six and walking two of the 31 batters she faced in 6.1 innings of work.
The Patriots will return to action when they face George Washington on the road on May 5 for a double-header, with the first game starting at 3 p.m.
