FAIRFAX, Va. - The Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association and US Lacrosse (IWLCA/USL) All-American Committee Monday (May 23) released the 48 athletes who earned Division I All-American honors for their play during the 2005 season, and George Mason University's Meg Dentler (Crofton, Md./Arundel) was given third-team consideration for her efforts. The senior goalkeeper received second-team honors in 2004 and joins former Patriot Jill Toomey (2000-03) as two-time Mason lacrosse All-Americans.
"I think Meg is very well deserving of this honor," stated head coach Amy Umbach. "She's done a wonderful job for us for four great years. She'll obviously be sorely missed next season. She's worked so hard and has put her heart and soul into this team and into lacrosse since she stepped foot on campus. I'm very proud of her and everything that she has accomplished for herself and for the Patriot program."
Dentler was chosen among a pool of 96 athletes that were named to IWLCA/USL all-region teams. She will receive her All-American certificate at the 2005 IWLCA/US Lacrosse All-American banquet on Saturday, June 4, in Baltimore, Md.
Dentler wraps up her career at Mason as one of its most decorated lacrosse players, having been a four-time all-CAA selection (2003-2005 first-team) a three-time all-region honoree (2004 first team, 2005, 2003 second team), a three-time all-Virginia award winner and the 2002 CAA Rookie of the Year. She ranks in the Patriot lacrosse career records book for games started (T-1st), games played (T-1st), ground balls (7th), goalkeeper minutes (1st), save percentage (1st), goals-against average (2nd) and saves (1st).
The first George Mason women's lacrosse player to be named CAA Player of the Year (2005), Dentler played every minute of every game in goal in 2005 and concluded her season with the lowest goals-against average of her career (9.12), making 199 saves and allowing 158 goals - the fifth lowest in school history. Her 55.7 save percentage led the CAA and currently ranks seventh nationally.
George Mason completed 2005 with a 7-10 overall record and posted its highest regular season conference finish, tying for second in the league race and earning a 5-2 mark - for the most conference victories in a season. The Patriots advanced to the CAA Tournament for the 12th consecutive season, which is the longest mark of any team in the league.
