FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason men's and women's track and field teams competed at the 111th annual Penn Relays Thursday through Saturday. The event was held during a weekend of steady rain and drizzle.
Individually on the men's side, senior Quentin Matthews (Chesapeake, Va.) finished fifth in his heat of the men's high jump with a leap of 2.07 meters. Senior Jonathan Martin (Fairfax, Va.) jumped 1.96m in his heat of the high jump.
Colonial Athletic Association 110m hurdle champion Ricardo Melbourne (Sr.; Spanish Town, Jamaica) finished eighth in his 110m-hurdle heat and 23rd overall with a time of 14:26.
Triple jump results for senior Marc Kellman (Coram, N.Y.) and sophomore Ryan McCoy (Roanoke, Va.) were unavailable.
In the relay events, the Patriot 4x100m team of Kellman, Melbourne, junior Sammy Sesay (Hyattsville, Md.) and graduate student Mike Garner (Frederick, Md.) placed sixth in its heat in a time of 41.38.
The sprint medley relay team of Garner, Sesay, Melbourne and senior Ricardo Cunningham (Clarendon, Jamaica) posted the 10th best time overall (3:23.91) and ranked seventh in their heat.
Individually for the women, freshmen Sable Bell (Ft. Washington, Md.) and Shannon Maurer (Wildwood Crest, N.J.) "no heighted" in the ECAC division of the high jump.
Bell joined senior Ryann Holmes (Largo, Md.) and freshmen Alicia York (Havertown, Pa.) and Fiana York (Havertown, Pa.) as members of the 4x800m relay team. The squad recorded a time of 9:25.52, which placed them eighth in their heat and 18th overall.
Mason's 4x100m relay squad of seniors Paula Bailey (Winston Salem, N.C.), Shamekia Louis (Fairfax, Va.), Kathy Williams (Lanham, Md.) and freshman Misti Turner (Fort Worth, Texas) finished seventh in their heat and 54th overall with a time of 49.06.
Turner, Bailey, Louis and F. York combined for a 25th finish overall (4th in the heat) in the sprint medley relay with a time of 4:07.23.
George Mason's men's and women's track and field teams host the Mason Invitational on Saturday at George Mason Stadium. Field events begin at 10:30 a.m. and track events start at 11:05 a.m.
