PRINCETON, N.J. - Each time George Mason graduate student Mike Garner (Frederick, Md.) ran the 200m dash this season, he finished the event at a faster pace than his previous attempt, cutting off ten-hundredths of a second with each race. His persistence finally paid off Sunday as Garner captured the 200m dash individual title in a personal best and NCAA East Regional qualifying time of 20.90 at the 129th Annual Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America (IC4A) Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at Princeton University's Outdoor Track and Field Complex Sunday.
Garner, who also added the 100m dash individual title at the IC4A Championships (10.52), ran the sixth fastest 200m time in school history in earning the victory and helped lead Mason to a third-place finish at the meet with a team score of 54 points. Rutgers won the event with 76 points and Cornell was second with 59.
Senior Ricardo Cunningham (Clarendon, Jamaica), who ran a personal best (PB) time of 1:50.16 in Saturday's 800m trials, eclipsed his PB in the event for the second straight day, clocking in at 1:49.25 in the finals for a third-place finish. Junior Sammy Sesay (Hyattsville, Md.) placed fifth in the 100m dash, crossing the finish line in 10.71.
Freshman Brian Hay (Kingston, Jamaica), who ran a season-best 14.39 in the trials of the 110m hurdles Saturday, improved his time by .03 seconds in the finals where he finished sixth. But, for the second straight day, he narrowly missed out on the NCAA minimum-qualifying standard of 14.33 after finishing the race in 14.36.
Senior Marc Kellman (Coram, N.Y.) continued his stellar season in the triple jump, completing the event at the IC4A's in second place with a leap of 15.83m (51'11.25"). Kellman's jump ranks seventh all-time in school history and eclipses his personal best by almost five inches. Also in the field events, junior Quentin Matthews (Chesapeake, Va.) tied for fourth in the high jump with a leap of 2.04m (6'8.25").
The Patriot 4x100m relay team of Kellman, Sesay, senior Justin Hernandez (Fairfax, Va.) and Garner finished fifth after posting 41.25 in the final.
George Mason will take a week off to prepare for the NCAA East Regional meet, which will be held May 27-28 at Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island (N.Y.) near Manhattan.
