Box Score
The George Washington baseball team strung its hits together while George Mason's hits were scattered and the Colonials were able to ride a solid performance from start Brian Frazier as George Washington defeated the Patriots 6-4 in non-conference baseball action at Spuhler Field in Fairfax, Va. It's George Washington's fourth-straight win over Mason.
George Washington (33-16) got on the scoreboard early when Matt Owens singled with one out in the third, went to second on an error by first baseman Chris Looze on a pickoff play, and scored on an error by third baseman Chris Fournier on a grounder by Joe Michalski.
Mason (30-17) responded in the bottom of the third when Matt Cooksey drew a two-out walk, stole second and scored on Chris Looze's RBI single to right. Looze stole second on the first pitch to Adam Innerst and scored when Innerst doubled on the second pitch.
The Colonials quickly retook the lead as Ryan Roberson doubled with one out in the fourth and scored on a single by Josh Goldberg. Goldberg went to second on the throw and he scored on a single by Michael Parker, making it 3-2. Mickey Shupin's single to right brought home Parker to give the Colonials a two-run lead.
The Colonials added to their lead in the fifth. George Washington got a lead-off double from Brad Rosenblat in the fifth and Geoff Milsom followed with a double to make it 5-2. After a ground out, Roberson doubled to deep left-center to make it 6-2, ending the day for Mason starter Josh Morrison.
Mason got a run back in the bottom of the sixth when Adam Innerst reached on an error to lead off the inning and Casey Slattery walked to put runners on first and second. Robby Jacobsen's fly out to right moved Innerst to third and he scored on a two-out single to right by Tyler Youngs.
In the bottom of the eighth, Mason pulled to within two as Adam Innerst led off the inning with a double, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Matt Barrett's ground out.
Mason threatened in the ninth when Matt Cooksey hit a two-out triple, the 20th of his career. But the rally ended when Chris Looze grounded out to third.
Frazier (7-0) got the win for George Washington. He pitched seven-plus innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits with three walks and seven strikeouts. Avi Rasowsky pitched the eighth, allowing no hits and walking one, and Joel Brookins pitched the ninth for his fifth save of the season.
Morrison (5-3) took the loss, allowing six runs, five earned, in four and one-third innings of work. He struck out three batters and walked none. Tyler Wingerd was spectacular in relief for Mason, allowing no hits in four and two-thirds innings, striking out one and walking none. The only batter to reach base against him was the first batter he faced, Goldberg, who he hit with his first pitch.
The Patriots are off for 10 days due to finals but return to action on May 20 when they host James Madison in the start of a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series.
