WILMINGTON, N.C. - UNC Wilmington scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to rally from a four-run deficit and defeat George Mason, 5-4, in Colonial Athletic Association softball action Sunday at Boseman Field.
The Seahawks improve to 22-41 overall and 4-11 in the CAA with the win. The win gives UNCW its first conference series victory of the season. The Patriots fall to 19-28 on the year and 6-11 in conference play with the loss.
Senior Amanda Wilson pitched her fourth complete game of the season to improve to 3-6. Wilson allowed four runs on eight hits. She struck out four and walked two.
Sophomore Megan Farrell was credited with the loss for the Patriots to fall to 8-10 on the year. Farrell surrendered two runs on four hits in one inning of work. Freshman Arielle Weinkofsky got the start for the Patriots and went four innings, allowing two runs on six hits. Weinkofsky struck out three and did not issue a walk. Freshman Amber Straube replaced Weinkofsky in the fifth and went one inning. She gave up one run on one hit in five batters faced.
Senior Christina Elmore was 3-for-3 with two runs batted in and a stolen base to lead the Seahawk attack. Freshman Whitney Knudsen was 2-for-4 with a triple and a run batted and junior Hayley House was 2-for-4 with a double.
Sophomore Megan Farrell was 1-for-4 with a three-run home run to pace the Patriots lineup. Senior Stacy James and freshman Amanda Bach each had two hits in four appearances at the plate.
Farrell staked Mason to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first when she hit a three-run home run to left field. The blast was Farrell's first home run of the season.
Bach increased the Patriot lead to 4-0 in the fourth when she doubled to left center with two outs and used two wild pitches from Wilson to score during the next at-bat.
The Seahawks cut the deficit to 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth with two runs on three hits. Freshman Lindsay Styons brought in the first run of the frame when she tripled into the right field corner, scoring freshman Paige Wakefield from first. Wakefield opened the inning with a single. Elmore plated the second run of the frame on a slap single to the shortstop that allowed freshman pinch runner Meghan Murray to score from third.
Elmore pulled UNCW within one, 4-3, in the bottom of the sixth when she singled to the shortstop for the second time on the afternoon, scoring House from third. House led off the inning with a double to right center.
In the seventh inning, freshman Jessica Sanders started the rally with a single to right field. Sanders then moved to second on her second stolen base of the afternoon before Knudsen brought her home with a single to left field. Knudsen moved to third on the play and scored one batter later when sophomore Krista Searle singled up the middle.
