Box Score

Towson, Md. - Freshman righthander Arielle Weinkofsky (Ocean Township H.S./Oakhurst, N.J.) pitched a perfect game for six innings in the second game as George Mason University (14-19, 4-3) split a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader with CAA-leading Towson University (19-13, 6-1) by edging the Tigers, 1-0. In the opener, senior righthander Jessica Wides (Damascus H.S./Gaithersburg, Md.) led the Tigers to a 1-0 win as she threw a two-hit shutout.

Weinkofsky, who is now 3-6 on the season, outdueled freshman righthander Jessica Fisher (Dakota Ridge H.S./Littleton, Col.) of Towson to win the nightcap, 1-0. Weinkofsky, who had no walks and no strikeouts, pitched a perfect game for six innings. However, senior shortstop Katie Mumbauer (Liberty H.S./Bethlehem, Pa.) led off the seventh inning with a single to centerfield, giving Towson its first base runner of the game.

At that point, Weinkofsky was relieved by freshman righthander Amber Straube (Princess Anne H.S./Virginia Beach, Va.). Straube earned her first save of the season when she retired the next three Tigers in order to complete the one-hit shutout. Sophomore Megan Zwoyer (El Camino Rea; H.S./Woodland Hills, Cal.) tried to bunt Mumbauer over to second base but popped up the bunt to junior third baseman Emily Grapel (Manasquan H.S./Manasquan, N.J.). Straube then retired senior centerfielder Jeanne Bosch (Patchogue-Medford H.S./Medford, N.Y.) on a popup to second base and ended the game by getting by senior first baseman Samantha Schaukowitch (St. Ignatius H.S./San Bruno, Cal.) to ground out to Grapel.

Fisher, who had her six-game winning streak ended, pitched a no-hitter for the first four innings until the Patriots broke through in the fifth inning. Grapel led off the inning with a single. She went to second base on a sacrifice bunt by junior Reanna Gallaegos (Robert E. Lee H.S./Springfield, Va.). A single by freshman first baseman Kristin Dickel (North Penn H.S./North Wales, Pa.) sent Grapel to third base. When Weinkofsky followed with a single to left, the Patriots had the only run they would need.

Fisher allowed one run on six hits and did not walk a batter. She had four strikeouts as her record dropped to 9-5.

In the opener, Wides tossed her second shutout of the season and the 14th of her career as she outdueled sophomore righthander Megan Farrell (Bishop Eustace H.S./Medford, N.J.). Now 7-5 on the season, Wides won her fifth decision in a row. She struck out a season high 11 batters and walked one. The win was her 40th career victory as she moved into third place on the Tigers' all-time list of career leaders.

The Tigers scored the only run they would need in the first inning when Mumbauer led off with a walk. Zwoyer sacrificed her to second base with a bunt. With two outs, Mumbauer scored on a bloop single to rightfield by Schaukowitch.

Mumbauer led the Tigers by going two-for-two with a walk. She also made an outstanding play with a runner on base and two outs in the sixth inning. She went deep in the hole to grab a shot by senior shortstop Stacy James (Loudon County H.S./Leesburg, Va.) and threw her out by a half-step.

The Tigers outhit the Patriots in the opener, 5-2. Farrell suffered the loss as she allowed only five hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

The Tigers and the Patriots will conclude their three-game CAA weekend series on Sunday afternoon. The series finale is set for 1:00 p.m.
