Fairfax, Va. (4/5/2005) - The men's tennis team was shut-out by Howard University today, defeating the Patriots 7-0. Mason drops to 0-5 on the season with the loss.
In singles action, Howard didn't lose more than four games in any set sweeping through all six matches. The Bison's top player Kenneth Brown defeated Stephan Dufils, 6-4, 6-2. The No. 2 and No. 3 matches were won by the identical 6-2, 6-2 scores by Howard's Brandon Smith and Jibade Thomas, defeating Mason's Tim Bainton and Eric Vogel.
The Patriots won only seven games in the No. 4-6 singles matches. Phu Le lost to Faron Carter, 6-0, 6-0; Rob Santos lost to Othmane Garma 6-1, 6-2; and Miles Hughes was defeated by Neilabh Avasthi, 6-3, 6-1.
The Bison's No. 1 doubles team Thomas/Carter defeated Mason's counterpart Dufils/Bainton 8-3. Mason's Vogel and Hughes teamed up, but lost to the Bison's Brown and Smith, 8-2. At the final doubles position, Howard's Garma and Avasthi defeated Santos and Le, 8-1.
Mason host Mount St. Mary's tomorrow afternoon at the George Mason tennis courts.
