Virginia Commonwealth held onto its second-place standing in the Colonial Athletic Association with an 18-8 win over George Mason on Sunday. The Rams improve to 22-11 overall and 8-4 in the conference, while winning their fourth consecutive CAA series. Mason dropped to 23-13 and 8-7.
VCU used seven hits and three Patriot errors to their advantage, while scoring 10 runs in the sixth inning to secure the rubber match victory. The inning was highlighted by a two-run double by shortstop Sergio Miranda and a pair of hits by outfielder Trai Harris including a three-run double.
Mason scored five runs in the last five innings, including three in the ninth on a potential rally.
Matt Cooksey was 3 for 5 with a steal and a home run while Chris Fournier was 2 for 5 with three RBI. Chris Looze was 1 for 3 with two RBI. Brent Hitz fell to 3-4 on the year, absorbing the loss for Mason.
The Patriots are next in action on Tuesday when they play at Georgetown and then again on Wednesday when they travel to Mount St. Mary's.
