Box Score

Philadelphia, Pa. - After wrapping up the remainder of a 3-1 win over Drexel, a game that had been suspended on April 23, Mason dropped the final game of the series, 9-1, on a walk-off two-run homerun by Amanda Heyser that invoked the eight-run mercy rule. The Patriots closed out the weekend with an overall record of 18-26 and a 5-9 Colonial Athletic Association mark, while the Dragons are now 17-15 overall (8-6 CAA).

Game Two
Resuming yesterday's game in Mason's half of the sixth with runners on second and third and one out, Krista Van Wert walked Lesley Hassen (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) then got the next batter to fly to left field. Drexel relayed the ball in and challenged the call asking if the runner at third left early. The appeal was upheld for an inning-ending double play.

Van Wert fanned two batters looking in the seventh, but the Dragons could not get the offense going quickly enough to rally and Mason grabbed a 3-1 lead yesterday before the rain. Hassen homered in the second inning to give Mason a 1-0 lead. The Patriots added another run in the third when senior shortstop Stacy James (Leesburg, Va.) singled to right and sold second. The next batter hit a dribbled back up the middle under Van Wert's glove. Aiken dropped it trying to make the play at second allowing James to score. Van Wert fanned the final batter to end the inning stranding a runner on third.

Drexel picked up a run in the bottom of the fourth. Fuller led off by lacing a singled to right field. Dacey got around on a high fastball dropping it just inside the leftfield line for an RBI double. Rain picked up in the sixth inning as Mason tacked on its third run of the day when Emily Miller came in to score from first on a throwing error by Chrissy Hulme who fielded a bunt by sophomore Megan Farrell (Medford, N.J.).

Game Three
Drexel's seven-eight-nine hitters combined for four hits and drove in all of the Dragons' runs in a 9-1 drubbing of the Patriots to close the series. Drexel invoked the mercy rule to claim victory after taking an eight-run lead in the fifth inning. Heyser went 2-for-3 in the game with a two-run double in addition to her walk-off blast.

Drexel got some two-out thunder in the second inning on a two-run double by Heyser and an RBI single by Lena Aiken (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion). Jonnaé McClain (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) led off with a walk and Molly Dacey (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) blooped a single into short right field. Hulme hit into a fielder's choice. But Drexel strung together three straight hits including Heyser's double to the wall and singles by Aiken and Hastings to take a 3-0 lead.

Mason got one back in the fourth when Grapel hit a grounder that bounced off the glove of a diving Brianne Brown (Levittown, Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic) at shortstop scoring Stacy James (Leesburg, Va./Loudon County). The Patriots left them loaded in the top of the fifth when Van Wert walked two but Greenberg sprinted to track down a fly ball in center for the last out.

The Dragons put the game away in the fifth inning, loading the pads on a pair of errors and a single by Brown. Van Wert scored on a wild pitch and Farrell walked Dacey to load them again. Farrell got the hook after walking Dacey, giving way to Amber Straube (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne). Hulme promptly connected on a bases clearing double to the wall in right center. Heyser stepped up to the plate and took the first pitch she saw out of the park. The two-run homer to left center invoked the eight-run rule for the first time in a Drexel victory since the 2003 season when the Dragons beat UMES 16-0.

Van Wert, who took the loss in game two, picked up the win in game three. She worked five innings and yielded one run on three hits and struck out four batters to pick up her 10th win of the season. Farrell fell to 7-9 after giving up five earned runs on five hits and three walks.
