FAIRFAX, Va. - UNC Wilmington earned 218.50 points to win the 2005 Colonial Athletic Association Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships held Saturday afternoon at George Mason Stadium on the campus of George Mason University. It's the Seahawks' seventh title in nine years and first since 2002. The meet was delayed 2 hours and 15 minutes due to inclement weather with three events remaining.
UNCW, which was second after Friday's results, overtook William & Mary Saturday to claim the crown. Virginia Commonwealth finished second with 172 points, while George Mason improved from sixth to third overall with 140. The Tribe dropped three spots and finished fourth (132). Delaware was fifth (77.50) and James Madison was sixth (72).
George Mason senior Ricardo Melbourne (Spanish Town, Jamaica) was named the Meet's Outstanding Performer after winning the 110m (14.23) and 400m (52.20) hurdle races in NCAA East Regional Qualifying times. He was also a member of Mason's first-place 4x100m relay squad that posted an NCAA qualifying time of 40.58.
Overall, UNC Wilmington claimed five individual titles, including the hammer, pole vault, shot put, decathlon and 400m dash. The Seahawks also won the 4x400m relay race. UNCW's Zeickia Ledwell posted an NCAA East Regional qualifying time of 46.92 to lead the 400m dash.
Virginia Commonwealth earned three individual crowns with victories in the long jump, javelin and high jump. The Rams' Davion Lambert won the long and high jumps in NCAA qualifying marks of 7.44m and 2.10m, respectively.
George Mason made a huge jump after Friday's sixth-place showing to finish third overall. Mason won six individual championships and also captured the 4x100m relay. Joining Melbourne with individual titles was senior Marc Kellman (Coram, N.Y.) with an NCAA qualifying leap of 15.63m in the triple jump. Senior Mike Garner (Frederick, Md.) won the 100m and 200m (21.42) dashes. His time of 10.40 in the 100m qualifies him for the NCAA East Regional meet. Senior Ricardo Cunningham (Clarendon, Jamaica) won the 800m run in a time of 1:51.60. Melbourne teamed with Garner, freshman Brian Hay (Kingston, Jamaica) and junior Sammy Sesay (Hyattsville, Md.) to win the 4x100m relay.
The Patriots posted top five finishes in several other events. Kellman and sophomore Ryan McCoy (Roanoke, Va.) placed second and third in the long jump. McCoy and freshman Lyle McMullen (Roanoke, Va.) were second and fourth in the triple jump. McCoy's triple jump leap of 15.09 qualified him for the NCAA Regional. Sesay was third overall in the 100m dash and fourth in the 200m ahead of Kellman who placed fifth.
Senior Quentin Matthews (Chesapeake, Va.) finished third in the high jump ahead of teammates Jonathan Martin (Sr.; Fairfax, Va.) and Wayne Wright (Sr.; Roanoke, Va.), who placed fourth and fifth.
George Mason's men's track and field team continues its outdoor season next weekend at the prestigious Penn Relays Carnival in Philadelphia from Thursday, Apr. 28 through Saturday, Apr. 30.
