FAIRFAX, Va. - William & Mary earned 218 points and won its fifth straight title at the 2005 Colonial Athletic Association Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championship Saturday afternoon at George Mason Stadium on the campus of George Mason University. The meet was delayed 2 hours and 15 minutes due to inclement weather with three events remaining.
Virginia Commonwealth jumped from sixth-place after Friday's events to edge UNC Wilmington for second in the standings. The Rams garnered 163 points compared to 162 for the third-place Seahawks. James Madison was fourth (83), followed by Towson (76), George Mason (72) and Delaware (41).
Cheri Manning of Virginia Commonwealth was named the Meet's Outstanding Performer after winning the 400 and 200m dashes.
William & Mary registered three individual champions.. The Tribe won the shot put, 1500m run and the heptathlon. The College also posted the best 4x400m relay time of 3:50.94
Virginia Commonwealth collected six individual championships in the high jump, triple jump, 400m dash, 100m hurdles, long jump and 200m dash. VCU's Tanika Brown registered an NCAA East Regional qualifying mark of 1.80m to win the high jump. UNC Wilmington had individual champions in the discus, 100m dash, hammer, javelin and 400m hurdles. The Seahawks also finished first in the 4x100m dash.
George Mason freshman Fiana York (Havertown, Pa.) took home top honors in the 800m run with a time of 2:13.02. Senior teammate Ryann Holmes (Largo, Md.) was second at 2:15.42.
The Patriots posted several top five finishes in other events, including fourth by the 4x100m relay team of seniors Paula Bailey (Winston Salem, N.C.), Kathy Williams (Lanham, Md.) and Shamekia Louis (Fairfax, Va.) and freshman Misti Turner (Fort Worth, Texas). Mason's 4x400m relay squad of Turner, Holmes, York, and Bailey placed second with a time of 3:54.73.
Bailey and Louis each finished second in the 400m (55.98) and 100m (12.13) dashes, respectively. Bailey was also second in the 200m final (24.82). Junior Ashley Ackerley (Burke, Va.) was fourth in the discus with a throw of 39.70m.
Williams completed the heptathlon in seventh place with 3,966 points. Freshman Sable Bell (Ft. Washington, Md.) was 11th.
George Mason's women's track and field team continues its outdoor season next weekend at the prestigious Penn Relays Carnival in Philadelphia from Thursday, Apr. 28 through Saturday, Apr. 30.
