FAIRFAX, Va. (Apr. 22, 2005) - William & Mary leads after day one of the 2005 Colonial Athletic Association Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held Friday at George Mason Stadium on the campus of George Mason University.
The Tribe accumulated 93 points on the day, outdistancing UNC Wilmington, which holds down second with 75.50 points. Virginia Commonwealth is third (45), followed by Delaware (25.50), James Madison (18) and George Mason (16).
William & Mary helped itself with impressive performances in the distance running events. The Tribe claimed four of the five top positions in the 5,000 M run, five of the top six positions in the 10,000 M run and the top five poles in the 3,000 M steeplechase. Ed Moran won the 5,000 M for the Tribe in an NCAA East Regional qualifying time of 14:12.31. Teammate Christo Landry also qualified for the regional meet with in the 5,000 M with a second-place time of 14:13.88.
UNC Wilmington and Virginia Commonwealth fared well in the field events. The Seahawks nabbed five of the first six positions in the hammer throw, including Matthew Roden's NCAA East Regional qualifying top toss of 57.52m. UNCW also grabbed three of the top four slots in the pole vault.
The Rams claimed individual victories in the javelin and long jump. VCU's Davion Lambert posted an NCAA East Regional qualifying long jump mark of 7.44m to win the event. Virginia Commonwealth's Kyle Miller leads the Decathlon with a score of 3,280 after five events.
George Mason senior Marc Kellman (Coram, N.Y.) placed second in the long jump with an IC4A qualifying leap of 7.32m. Sophomore teammate Ryan McCoy (Roanoke, Va.) was third (7.08m) and freshman Lyle McMullen (Roanoke, Va.) finished seventh (6.67m).
Also in action for George Mason were seniors Charles Bowles (Boyce, Va.) and Ben Sommers (Nashua, N.H.) along with junior Dennis Moriarty (Rockville Centre, N.Y.). Sommers and Moriarty placed ninth and 12th, respectively, in the 5,000 M run, while Bowles finished 13th in the 10,000 M.
The CAA Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships conclude on Saturday, beginning at 9:30 a.m. with the decathlon. Field events start at 10 a.m. and track events begin at 12:40 p.m.
