Box Score
The rain that fell on Spuhler Field on Tuesday was unexpected. The fact that Mason won for the ninth time in 11 Division I meetings with Mount St. Mary's was not as the two teams combined for three runs with the Patriots defeating Mount St. Mary's 2-1.
The two teams needed just an hour and 23 minutes to play an official game as rain halted the affair after The Mount batted in the top of the fifth. After an hour and 15 minutes of waiting, the game was finally called due to the weather with Josh Morrison (3-2) getting the complete game victory, walking one, striking out four and allowing eight hits and one earned run in five innings. Craig Henson (0-1) took the loss, allowing seven hits and two earned runs in four innings while walking one and striking out three. He worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the second and a bases-loaded no-out jam in the third to keep The Mount in the game.
Mount St. Mary's (12-18) took a 1-0 lead in the first as Joseph Hayes led off with a single, went to second on a passes ball and scored on a Stephan Fay single to center. Mason (21-11) tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Matt York led off with a home run to left-center field. The Patriots loaded the bases in the second as Adam Innerst singled and Brett Pmykala and Tyler Youngs were hit by pitches, but York lined into a double play when first baseman Hayes grabbed his scorcher and stepped on first to retire Youngs.
In the Mason third, Matt Cooksey led off with a double to left, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Chris Looze single to center. After Robby Jacobsen singled and Chris Fournier walked, Innerst struck out looking, Jacobsen struck out swinging and Jimmy Freund flew out to right. But the insurance runs weren't needed as Morrison repeatedly worked out of jams. In the third, he got Adam Schlenoff to line into a double play with a runner on and nobody out. In the fourth, Fay led off with a single, Josh Vittek walked and Daniel Fowler singled to load the bases with one out. But Morrison got Matt Trusch to ground into an inning-ending double play. In the fifth, Hayes led off with a single but Morrison struck out two of the next four batters to end the threat.
Mason is now 4-4 on its homestand, which concludes on Wednesday when the Patriots host Navy at 3 p.m. Mount St. Mary's returns home to host Bucknell at 4 p.m.
