Pittsburgh, Pa. (April 17, 2005)--The Mason women's tennis team finished the regular season with a 6-1 loss to Duquesne at the Washington Landing Tennis Courts in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Patriots (11-12, 3-4) ended the regular season playing five matches in six days.
The top two matches in doubles play were very well contested, but the Dukes came away with two wins, as the team of Jackie Hughes and Alicia McNamara defeated Andreea Fusea and Maricel Ballester, 9-7 and Johanna Bezjak and Julie Wagner halted Jenn Dektaas and Julia Moscato's three match win streak, winning 8-6. Sarah Shanahan and Ciara McDermott beat Patriots Jamie Delorie and Katie Sloper, 8-2 for the sweep and the point.
Mason earned its only point from freshman Julia Moscato's 6-3, 6-4 victory at the No. 5 singles. Moscato finishes her first regular season with an 11-6 mark, including 3-0 from the No. 5 singles position.
The top two singles matches were very close with the Dukes Johanna Bezjak defeating Fusea, 6-4, 7-6 and Jackie Hughes beating Jenn Dektas, 6-4, 6-2, moving up a singles position with Ballester resting with knee tendonitis. Junior Fusea finishes her first season at Mason with a 13-7 singles mark from the top position, 20-8 record overall. Junior Dektas finished above the .500 mark with a 12-9 spring record, 14-11 overall.
Duquesne lost only six games in the No. 3, 4 and 6 matches to earn three points. At No. 3 Julie Wagner defeated Jamie Delorie, 6-1, 6-1; Sarah Shanahan defeated Katie Sloper; and Ciara McDermott defeated Melissa Wooten, 6-1, 6-1.
The CAA Championships start on Thursday, April 21 at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va.
