HOT SPRINGS, VA. (April 17, 2005) - George Mason carded a 306 team score to finish the CAA Championship in seventh place, moving up one spot from eighth place after round two. Junior Mike Kirby (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) led the Patriots in all three rounds and finished individually in eighth place with a (70-75-78) 223.

The team scored 21 strokes better in the final round than in round two, with four scores in the seventies and one 81 to finish (303-327-306) 936. Trey Bressler (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) and Nick DeSimone (Sykesville, Md./Liberty) carded their best round in three days, with Bressler carding a (77-81-74) 232 and DeSimone a (79-87-75) 241. Dan Hurley (Leesburg, Va./Loudon) also scored a 241 (78-84-79) to finish tied for 38. Mike Cavanagh (Perham, Minn./Hibbing) finished tied for 46th with a 247 (78-88-81).

Led by medallist Brian Joyce's closing round 68, the UNC Wilmington Seahawks posted a 10-stroke victory over a hard charging Towson University squad to capture their second consecutive CAA men's golf title and earn the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Regionals.

Joyce (Wilson, N.C./ Greenfield School) carded the low round of the tournament and was one of only three players under par on the final day in ideal scoring conditions on the 6,679-yard Upper Cascades Course at The Homestead Resort.

Playing in the final threesome of the day, Joyce birdied two of his final four holes including the 229-yard 15th and the 513-yard 17th hole for a two-under par score and a three-day total of even par (71-71-68=210). His even par finish was the highest winning total in the past six years at he CAA Championship.

Playing a wave ahead of the Seahawks, Towson closed with the low team score of the tournament (289) but it was not enough as the Tigers' charge came up short. The Tigers, who led the tournament by a single stroke after day one, started round three 15 strokes off the pace in fourth place after a disappointing second day when only senior Billy Wingerd (Baltimore, Md./Overlea) broke 75.

The 2004 CAA champion, Wingerd recorded a final round 72 to pace the Tigers and finished tied for third with a three-day total of 219. His nine-over par finish thwarted his bid to become the first player in CAA history to complete four consecutive CAA championships under par.

Second day individual leader Jairo Irreno (Potomac, Maryland/Winston Churchill) from James Madison University entered the last day with a two-stroke led over Joyce but faded with a 79.

Virginia Commonwealh University junior Manuel Relancio (Corrientes, Argentina) fired a closing round 69 to place second individually and help the Rams to a third place result in the team standings.

Towson sophomore Jeff Castle (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) notched the only other sub-70 score on the final day with a closing 69 to finish in fifth place (220).
