Fairfax, Va.--George Mason University's softball team (16-23, 4-7 CAA) was defeated by James Madison (20-21, 3-6) Sunday afternoon by a score of 1-0 at George Mason Field.
Mason collected three hits on the afternoon, with junior Emily Grapel (Manasquan, N.J.) amassing two of those hits in her three tries at bat. Grapel hit a single in both the fifth and seventh innings, while senior shortstop Stacy James (Leesburg, Va.) connected on a single to leftfield in the bottom of the first.
The lone run of the game was scored in the top of the third as JMU sophomore Katie George hit a single and was brought across home plate after junior Megan Smith hit a single to leftfield to earn an RBI. The Patriots ended the inning with a double play as the Dukes' Kelly Berkemeier lined out to shortstop and James went on to throw Smith out at second base.
Sophomore Megan Farrell (Medford, N.J.) was in the circle for all seven innings and gave up one run off of nine hits, while walking four and striking out two of the 33 Dukes she faced at the plate. JMU senior Liz George notched her second win of the weekend as she only gave up three hits, while striking out seven Patriots.
The Patriots will return to action when they host St. Francis (Pa.) for a non-conference double-header on April 19, with the first game starting at 2:30 p.m.
