Box Score

Fairfax, Va.--George Mason University's softball team (16-22, 4-6 CAA) dropped both games of a double-header against James Madison (19-21, 2-6) by scores of 4-3 and 7-1, respectively, Saturday afternoon at George Mason Field.

In the first game, Mason took a 2-0 lead in the third inning as freshman Amanda Bach (Chesapeake, Va.) connected on a double and was sent across home plate after freshman Emily Miller (Springfield, Va.) hit a single to left centerfield. Junior Emily Grapel (Manasquan, N.J.) hit a single to rightfield to earn an RBI as Miller scored Mason's second run.

James Madison answered in the fifth inning as the Dukes had the bases loaded with two outs and senior Katie Jaworski knocked one over the fence for a grand slam to give JMU a 4-2 lead. Mason would pull within one in the bottom of the fifth as Miller connected on a triple to rightfield and scored off of a passed ball, but the Patriots would not score any more in the first contest.

Sophomore Megan Farrell (Medford, N.J.) pitched the entire game for the Patriots and gave up four runs off of eight hits, while walking two and striking out two of the 30 batters she faced. Junior Briana Carrera earned the win for JMU as she gave up three runs off of six hits, while walking two and striking out five Patriots.

James Madison senior Liz George was pitching a no-hitter until the bottom of the fifth inning when Grapel hit a solo homerun to centerfield, which put the score at 3-1. George would only allow one more hit as Bach hit a single to rightfield in the sixth, but was unable to score as the following two batters lined-out to third base. JMU's bats lit on fire in the top of the seventh as the Dukes scored four runs off of four hits to secure its 7-1 win over the Patriots.

Freshman pitcher Arielle Weinkofsky (Oakhurst, N.J.) was on the mound for the Patriots for five innings and gave up three runs off of five hits, while walking one and striking out one batter. Freshman Amber Straube (Virginia Beach, Va.) relieved Weinkofsky in the top of the sixth and gave up four runs off of five hits, while striking out three of the 12 batters she faced. Along with only allowing one run and two hits, George walked one and struck-out six Patriots.

The Patriots and Dukes will wrap-up the three-game series on April 17 at George Mason Field (12 p.m.).
