FAIRFAX, Va. - The visiting fifth-ranked Virginia Cavaliers women's lacrosse team scored the first seven goals of the contest en route to a 12-7 win over host George Mason Wednesday evening at George Mason Stadium. Mason falls to 4-8 overall, while Virginia improves to 10-2 on the season.
Freshman attacker Laura King (Springfield, Pa.) and senior midfielder Brandi Evans (Fort Howard, Md.) each scored two goals to lead the Patriots. Attacker Tyler Leachman led Virginia with three goals and two assists. Attacker Amy Appelt netted two scores and an assist and Cary Chasney posted three markers. Kim Connors also recorded two scores.
The Cavaliers raced out to a 7-0 advantage in the game's first 15 minutes as Appelt and Chasney each had two goals. King finally put the Patriots on the board at 13:39, beginning a four-goal run for Mason, including back-to-back tallies from Evans, that trimmed the deficit to 7-4 with 1:25 left in the first half. But, Chasney scored with help from Appelt seconds later off the ensuing draw control to give the Cavs an 8-4 lead that held up until halftime.
The two teams traded goals to start the second half. King's marker at 21:08 cut the Virginia advantage to 10-6 and Frank registered a free position goal at 21:08 that left the Patriots trailing by only three, 10-7, with 17:22 left on the clock. Leachman swung the momentum back in favor of Virginia off the draw control, as she raced down the field and connected nine seconds later for an 11-7 margin. She would score the game's final tally at 14:45 off a free position shot as neither team could find the back of the net for the rest of the period.
Both goalkeepers played well on the night. George Mason senior All-American Meg Dentler (Crofton, Md.) corralled 16 saves and allowed 12 goals. The Cavs' Ginger Miles stopped 13 shots in allowing seven goals.
Virginia held a 28-24 advantage in shots and led 13-8 in draw controls. The Cavaliers were nearly perfect from free position, making 4-of-5 of their attempts.
George Mason heads back into Colonial Athletic Association play this weekend as it visits Drexel Friday at 3 p.m. and travels to 13th-ranked Hofstra Sunday for a 1 p.m. tilt.
