FAIRFAX, Va. - Virginia Tech rallied with four goals in the final eight minutes to defeat George Mason 11-8 in women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Mason's turf field. The match marked the home opener for the Patriots who fall to 0-2 on the season. After two straight postponed contests, the Hokies begin 2005 with a win to move to 1-0 overall.

Freshman attack Laura King (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) led Mason with five goals and sophomore midfielder Melissa Venturi (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) added two markers. Senior attack Kristy Manas (Harwood, Md./Southern) had two assists.

Midfielder Lindsay Pieper led Tech with three goals and one assist. Attacker Britt Faulkner totaled three goals and midfielder Natasha Fuchs recorded three assists and one goal.

Tech jumped out in front early as Fuchs connected with help from Pieper almost three minutes into the contest. Mason's King responded less than a minute later to tie the match. The Hokies put up two straight for a 3-1 advantage at 20:30, but Venturi sparked a three-goal run for Mason, giving the Patriots a 4-3 lead with 4:40 left. Both teams went into halftime tied at 4-4 after Pieper netted her second marker of the contest (2:19).

After the teams traded goals to begin the second stanza, King registered back-to-back scores to put the Patriots ahead 7-5. Following a VT time out, the Hokies' Stephanie Jones went back-to-back to tie the match at 7-all with 11:53 left. King's fifth goal of the game at 9:04 put Mason on top again 8-7, but Tech, which won nine of the 12 second half draw controls, countered with four straight scores to put the game away in the final minutes.

Mason senior goalkeeper Meg Dentler (Arundel, Md./Crofton) stopped nine shots and allowed 11 goals. Tech goalie Nikki Schiavone made 13 saves and allowed eight scores.

George Mason visits George Washington Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
