Garner Qualifies For Third IC4A Event in Final Opportunity

Men's Track and Field Competes at Raleigh Relays

RALEIGH, N.C. - Members of the George Mason University men's track and field team competed on day one of the Raleigh Relays, held at the Paul Derr Track on the campus of N.C. State University Friday and Saturday.

Senior Ben Sommers (Nashua, N.H./Nashua) placed 43rd in the 5000m run in a time of 15:38.28. Junior Dennis Moriarty (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Southside) joined Sommers in the event, as did senior Charles Bowles (Boyce, Va./Clarke County). Moriarty was 57th (15:49.16), while Bowles was 85th (16:49.98).

Senior Quentin Matthews (Chesapeake, Va./Deep Creek) was fourth in the high jump at 2.05m. Seniors Jonathan Martin (Fairfax, Va./Cal State Fullerton) and Wayne Wright (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) also competed.

Freshman Brian Hay (Kingston, Jamaica) finished 16th in the 110m hurdles in 14:81. Graduate student Mike Garner (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) and junior Sammy Sesay (Hyattsville, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) both ran season-bests of 10.67 and 10.95, respectively, in the 100m to place sixth and 15th.

In the 400m, sophomore Andres Maldonado (Fairfax, Va./Falls Church) posted Mason's top time, clocking in at 52.99 for 83rd. Senior Michael Akindele (Alexandria, Va./TC Williams) was 45th in the 400m hurdles in a season-best time of 57.25. Freshman teammate Lyle McMullen (Roanoke, Va./Northside) placed 63rd (1:01.21).

The Raleigh Relays conclude Saturday.
