NORFOLK, VA -- Stacen Gant, a first team All-CAA pitcher last year scattered four hits and fanned eight over seven innings to help lead George Mason (14-6/5-1) to a 6-1 CAA victory over Old Dominion (15-15/0-2) Saturday evening.
Mason took a, 3-0 lead in the fourth as Robby Jacobsen singled home Adam Innerst, and Friday night's hero Matt Barrett singled home Chris Fournier and Jacobsen with two outs.
In the ODU sixth, Evan Chipman doubled, then scored from third on Bryan Cipolla's (Plainview, NY.) sacrifice fly. ODU also threatened with two outs in the fifth inning on back-to-back singles by Justin Gregula (Washington, PA.) and Jesse Schoendienst (Belcamp, MD.).
Mason scored three more in the seventh with two outs as Chris Looze singled home Tyler Youngs and Matt York. Matt Cooksey then scored on a passed ball.
Gant, who leads the CAA with a 5-0 record, held ODU hitless until two outs in the fifth. Jared Petrovich pitched the last two innings for Mason. Ten of the 11 innings in which he has appeared this year he has held the opposition scoreless. ODU starter Bryan Hansen (Vass, NC.) fanned seven in seven-plus innings, while David Wagner (Johnstown, PA.) fanned two in relief.
Matt York was 2 for 5 for Mason while Looze and Barrett each had two RBI.
The two teams complete the conference series Sunday at 2 p.m.
