Patriot Women's Track & Field Concludes First Outdoor Meet of the Season

Coral Gables, Fla. - George Mason's women's track and field team concluded its first outdoor meet of the season Saturday with solid performances on day three of the Hurricane Invitational, held at Cobb Stadium on the campus of the University of Miami.

Freshman Misti Turner (Fort Worth, Texas/O.D. Wyatt) was Mason's top finisher in the 100m dash, coming in at a time of 12.52. Senior Paula Bailey (Winston-Salem, N.C./West Forsyth) ran 25.08 in the 200m and placed sixth overall in the 400m (57.42). Freshman Fiana York (Haverford, Pa./Haverford) posted the Patriots best time in the 800m at 2:21.63. Senior Ryann Holmes (Largo, Md./Largo Senior) and Shannon Runge posted marks of 4:59.66 and 11:30.19 in the 1500m and 3000m runs, respectively. In the 100m hurdles, senior Kathy Williams (Lanham, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) clocked in at 17.01.

The 4x100m relay team of Williams, Melissa Ferry (Fr.; West Chester, Pa./West Chester), Shamekia Louis (Sr.; Fairfax, Va./LSU) and Turner placed ninth in a time of 48.48.

In the field events, freshman Shannon Maurer (Wildwood Crest, N.J./Wildwood) jumped 1.49m in the high jump. Louis' 5.19m earned her a 12th-place showing in the long jump. Junior Ashley Ackerley (Burke, Va./Texas-San Antonio) competed in the shot put (11.21m) and the discus (40.34m) for Mason.

Also competing at the Hurricane Invitational were freshmen Sable Bell (Ft. Washington, Md./Oxon Hill), Danielle Turner (New Bern, N.C./New Bern) and Alicia York (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) and Shannon Hill.

The Patriots continue their outdoor season on Apr. 1-2, at the Maryland Invitational in College Park, Md.
