TEMPE, Ariz. - The Patriot men's track and field team opened its outdoor season with a meet at the Joe Selleh Track at Sun Angel Stadium on the campus of Arizona State University. Six field events and six distance events highlighted day one of the Baldy Castillo Invitational, being held Friday and Saturday, March 18-19 at ASU.
At least 24 George Mason athletes are participating at the Invitational, including senior Michael Akindele (Alexandria, Va./TC Williams), who finished 13th in the 400m hurdles (58.47) and Lyle McMullen, who was 14th (59.14) in the event.
In the men's 1500m run, Chris Hendrix-Buxton ran unattached from George Mason and completed the race in 20th in a time of 4:02.63. Freshman Ryan Davis (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) was 32nd (4:13.34) and senior Ben Sommers (Nashua, N.H./Nashua) was right behind in 33rd (4:14.16).
Junior Dennis Moriarty (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Southside) posted the Patriots' best finish in the 5000m run at 15:56.38, which was good enough for 10th. Charles Bowles was 11th (17:16.69).
Also competing on Friday was senior Marc Kellman (Coram, N.Y./West Virginia) and sophomore Ryan McCoy (Roanoke, Va./William Fleming) in the long jump. Both athletes tied for seventh in the finals with a jump of 6.92m.
Saturday's final events include the triple and high jumps as well as the relay, hurdle and sprint races.
