Richmond, Va.- The Patriots ran into nationally-ranked Virginia Commonwealth and a tough Hampton team, dropping both matches at the second day of competition at the VCU 4-1 tournament. Both teams defeated the Patriots, 5-0, leaving the Patriots with a 1-3 record at the tournament.

Against VCU, the nation's 46th-ranked singles player, freshman Marianna Yuferova claimed an easy 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Mason's Jenn Dektas. Vera Petreshevitch and Viktoria Konstantinova also cruised to victory, earning straight-set wins over Jamie Delorie (6-2, 6-0) and Katie Sloper (6-0, 6-0), respectively. Sophomore Camille Ripert rounded out singles play for the Rams, picking up a 6-1, 6-0 win over Melissa Wooten in the fourth-position.

In doubles play, Mason sent their top two players to the court Andreea Fusea and Mariel Ballester, against the tandem of juniors Olga Borisova and Cristina Arribas and were defeated 6-0, 6-1.

Against Hampton, Mason's top singles player Fusea lost to Leda Pestova in the tiebreaker third set and No. 2 singles Maricel Ballester fought hard in two sets, but lost 6-2, 6-4. Both Katie Sloper and Suzan Tugberk lost their matches, 6-0, 6-1, in straight sets in the No. 3 and No. 4 positions respectively. The team of Jenn Dektas and Jamie Delorie lost the doubles match, 6-3, 6-1.

The Patriots (1-4) will be back on the court at St. Francis (Penn) on Saturday February 12.
