Fairfax, Va.-George Mason University's swimming & diving teams both closed out their regular season with a victory Saturday afternoon against George Washington at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. The women (8-2) defeated the Colonials by a score of 140-90, while the men (8-1) walked away with a 144-87 win over GWU.
The Patriot women claimed eight first place finishes, while the Colonials captured five on the afternoon. Sarah Bizer won the first two events as she claimed the 50-yard freestyle event in a time of 24.30 and went on to win the 100 freestyle (54.20). Mason remained strong on the boards as Mary Campioli won the 1-meter diving event with a score of 275.09 and also finished first in the 3-meter (282.30).
In addition, Mason's 200-yard medley relay `Team A' of Rebecca Jimenez, Liz Ouzts, Brooke Crowther and Sarah Bizer won as the Patriots finished in a time of 1:48.73.
On the men's side, four Patriots each won two events to help with Mason's first place total of 10 to the Colonials' two. Tom Koucheravy dominated in the 1,000 freestyle as he won with a time of 9:33.65, while GWU's Sean Flaherty placed second (9:40.40). One of the events Tim Norton won was the 200 backstroke (1:54.44), while Joe Houchin claimed the 200 IM (1:56.65). John Appleman captured both diving events as he scored a 236.17 in the 1-meter and placed first in the 3-meter with a score of 278.32.
The Patriots will return to action on Feb. 23-26 when Mason hosts the 2005 Swimming & Diving Championships at the Aquatic & Fitness Center. Both of Mason's teams closed out their Colonial Athletic Association regular season with a flawless conference dual meet record of 7-0.
