In the final competition before next weekend's IC4A Championships, one George Mason track athlete took advantage of his final chance to qualify for the premier meet as Mike Garner ran the 55 meters in 6.47 seconds on Sunday, qualifying by .01 for the event. Garner's qualifying time came in the preliminaries and he finished second in the finals of the event at the 2005 Winter Open Invitational at Fairfax, Va.
Garner's time in the finals was 6.48, which would have matched the qualifying mark if not for his preliminary time. Teammate Sammy Sesay just missed qualifying for the 55-meters when he finished in 6.50. Garner will run three events at the IC4A as he previously qualified 60-meters and in the 200-meters. He won the 200-meters on Sunday.
It was a light day for the George Mason men's team as Olympian Richard Phillips sat out of the 60-meter hurdles. He has already qualified for the IC4A and provisionally qualified for the NCAA. Teammate Ricardo Melbourne, a qualifier in the hurdles for both IC4A and NCAA, also sat out.
Quentin Matthews tuned up for next week's meet by winning the high jump while Ryan McCoy finished first in the triple jump and second in the long jump. He will compete in both those events next week.
The IC4A Championships will be held at Boston, Mass. on Saturday and Sunday.
