Fairfax, Va. - The UNC Wilmington men and George Mason women reclaimed their leads heading into the final day of competition at the CAA Swimming & Diving Championships at the Jim McKay Natatorium on the campus of George Mason University as both meets are very close.
UNC Wilmington holds a seven-point advantage over George Mason on the men's side and George Mason's women leads Towson by 33 points. The UNC Wilmington men and George Mason women are gunning for their fourth consecutive CAA Swimming & Diving Championships.
The UNC Wilmington men have 428 points after the third day of competition. George Mason has accumulated 421points followed by Old Dominion (345.50), Drexel (262), Towson (238.50), William & Mary (230), James Madison (205), Davidson (146), College of Charleston (118) and Delaware (72).
George Mason's women have 428 points followed by Towson (395), UNC Wilmington (392), William & Mary (362), James Madison (241), Davidson (220), College of Charleston (149), Old Dominion (147), Delaware (138) and Drexel (122).
Friday's finals were held in the men's and women's 400-individual medley, 100-butterfly, 200-freestyle, 100-breaststroke, 100-backstroke, 200-freestyle relay and the women's one-meter diving event.
George Mason's Christy Anderson claimed the 400-individual medley title with a time of 4:25.59. James Madison's Rebecca Schofield followed in 4:25.86 and UNC Wilmington's Katie McClure clocked a 4:29.33 for third place. On the men's side, George Mason's Tim Norton took top honors with a time of 3:57.96. James Madison's Brian Freitag took second in 4:01.67 and George Mason's Joe Houchin finished in 4:01.73.
Towson's Jennifer Irby took gold in the 100-butterly finishing with a CAA meet record time of 55.11. Delaware's Sara Stephens finished in 56.04 and Towson's Aly Whittaker 56.87. William & Mary's Eric Druker took the title on the men's side with a time of 50.46. UNC Wilmington's Ben Pulskamp was closely behind in 50.61 and James Madison's Brad Burton took third in 51.10.
Liz Lebherz of Towson claimed the 200-freestyle with a time of 1:50.72. Allison Keel of James Madison clocked a 1:51.72 for second place and William & Mary's Christina Monsees took third in 1:53.93. Drexel's Cem Pasaoglu took top honors on the men's side in 1:39.54. A pair of George Mason swimmers followed as Tom Koucheravy clocked a 1:41.11 and Mike Peterson a 1:41.31.
Towson's Whittaker earned the title in the women's 100-breaststroke finishing with a time of 1:03.68. Second place went to William & Mary's Kelly Reitz (1:04.24) and third to UNC Wilmington's Kim Jenko (1:05.54). George Mason's David Cooper registered a 57.07 for first place on the men's side. Old Dominion's Daniel Lundberg followed in 57.72 and William & Mary's Jeff Clark was third with a time of 58.07.
William & Mary's Meredith David claimed the women's 100-backstroke finishing with a time of 57.35. UNC Wilmington's Rebekah Teague was closely behind in 57.45 and the Seahawks' Sarah Beth Schooley was third in 57.66. Old Dominion's Patrik Balint claimed the men's 100-backstroke title in 50.55. Adam Brenneman of UNC Wilmington finished second in 50.60 and Towson's Ryan Cogdill took third in 50.91.
The women's 200-freestyle relay title went to Towson's team of Melissa Leach, Aly Hunt, Lebherz and Irby. The Tigers set a CAA meet record time of 1:34.16. Second place went to UNC Wilmington (1:35.33) and third to James Madison (1:36.01). UNC Wilmington's team of Eric Boyer, Nathan Chessey, Michael Krayer and Brenneman claimed the title on the men's side clocking a 1:23.07. William & Mary followed in 1:24.04 and Old Dominion took third in 1:24.08.
George Mason's Mary Campioli notched a CAA meet record best 276.80 points on the one-meter diving platform. Drexel's Evamarie Guerreri was second with 229.90 points and William & Mary's Carrie Gerloff third with 221.20 points.
Action resumes tomorrow with trials beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday's finals begin at 6 p.m. Final events include the men's and women's 1,650-freestyle, 200-backstroke, 100-freestyle, 200-breaststroke, 200-butterfly and the 400-freestyle relay. Finals will also be held in the men's three-meter diving event. A Championship Awards Ceremony will follow Saturday evening's competition.
