Fairfax, Va. - Towson's women's team and George Mason's men lead after the second day of competition at the CAA Swimming & Diving Championships at the Jim McKay Natatorium on the campus of George Mason University. Both meets are extremely close as Towson leads George Mason by just four points for the women and George Mason's men lead UNC Wilmington by six points.
Towson jumped in front of George Mason to take the lead on the women's side with 227 total points. The Patriots slipped to second place with 223 points followed by UNC Wilmington (191), William & Mary (164), James Madison (141), Davidson (116), College of Charleston (97), Old Dominion (90), Drexel (83) and Delaware (64).
George Mason's men's team fought back from a fourth place standing after Thursday's competition to take the lead with 245 total points. UNC Wilmington slipped to second place with 239 points followed by Old Dominion (203.50), Towson (149.50), Drexel (137), James Madison (118), William & Mary (117), Davidson (92), College of Charleston (81) and Delaware (42).
Thursday's final events were held in the men's and women's 500-freestyle relay, 200-individual medley, 50-freestyle and 400-medley relay as well as the men's one-meter diving event.
Old Dominion's Lauren Timby bested James Madison's Rebecca Schofield (4:57.88) and Towson's Liz Lebherz (4:57.98) to claim the 500-frrestyle in 4:56.98. George Mason's Tom Koucheravy took top honors on the men's side with a time of 4:28.69. Patrik Balint of Old Dominion followed in 4:33.54 and Towson's Ben Sonley was third with a time of 4:34.02.
Christy Anderson of George Mason raced to a first place finish in the 200-individual medley with a time of 2:04.76. Towson's Aly Whittaker (2:06.50) and Delaware's Sara Stephens (2:06.88) followed. In the men's event, George Mason recorded the top three finishes as Tim Norton took the crown in 1:52.57. The Patriots' David Cooper clocked a 1:52.89 and Joe Houchin 1:53.03.
Towson's Jennifer Irby took gold in the 50-freestyle with a CAA meet record time of 22.75. James Madison's Allison Keel notched a 23.48 and Towson's Aly Hunt finished in 23.52. UNC Wilmington took the top three spots for the men with Michael Krayer leading the way in 20.61. The Seahawk's Adam Brenneman was close behind in 20.63 and Eric Boyer finished in 20.87.
William & Mary's 400-medley relay team of Meredith David, Kelly Reitz, Michelle Calanog and Marnie Rognlien took the crown finishing in 3:50.09. Towson took second in 51.26 and George Mason was third in 52.31. UNC Wilmington's team of Wilson Trotter, Nathan Chessey, Brenneman and Krayer notched a 3:24.05 for top honors. Towson and Old Dominion each finished in 46.10 and George Mason 45.89.
UNC Wilmington's Dean Berman registered a CAA meet record of 357.65 points on the one-meter diving platform. Drexel's Steve Reustle (288.15) came in second and George Mason's John Appleman (277.05) claimed third place. Action resumes tomorrow with trials at 10 a.m. Friday's finals begin at 6 p.m. Final events include the men's and women's 400-individual medley, 100-butterfly, 200-freestyle, 100-breaststroke, 100-backstroke and 200-freestyle relay. Finals will also be held in the women's one-meter diving event. The championship concludes Saturday.
