Fairfax, Va. - The UNC Wilmington men and George Mason women took their first steps toward claiming their fourth consecutive CAA swimming & diving championships as the Seahawks and Patriots lead after the first day at the Jim McKay Natatorium on the campus of George Mason University.
The UNC Wilmington men accumulated 70 points while Drexel and Old Dominion are tied for second place with 64 points. George Mason tallied 62 points followed by Towson (58), William & Mary (56), Davidson (50), James Madison (48), College of Charleston (36) and Delaware (28).
The George Mason women put up 129 points while Towson scored 90 and Davidson 75. William & Mary has 68 points followed by James Madison (67), UNC Wilmington (64), Drexel (53), Old Dominion (48), College of Charleston (46) and Delaware (37).
Wednesday's finals featured the men's and women's 200-medley relay and 800-freestyle relay events. Three-meter diving finals were also held for the women.
UNC Wilmington's 200-medley relay team of Adam Brenneman, Wilson Trotter, Nathan Chessey and Michael Krayer clocked a time of 1:32.53 to take top honors. Towson's time of 1:33.39 was good for second place. Old Dominion claimed third place with a time of 1:33.57.
Towson won the 200-medley relay on the women's side with a CAA meet record time of 1:44.76. Kara Mills, Aly Whittaker, Jennifer Irby and Aly Hunt raced for the Tigers. UNC Wilmington was second with a time of 1:45.68 and George Mason was third in 1:46.03.
George Mason's Mary Campioli claimed the women's three-meter diving crown with 433.90 points. The Patriots' Liz Gabriel followed with 417.45 points and William & Mary's Carrie Gerloff scored a 415.05 for third place.
Towson claimed the women's 800-freestyle relay with a CAA meet record of 7:32.67. The team consisted of Irby, Hunt, Jessika Kluth and Liz Lebherz. James Madison came in second with a time of 7:34.01 and George Mason finished in third with a time of 7:40.23.
Drexel claimed the men's 800-freestyle relay with a time of 6:46.74. The team consisted of Chris Backhaus, Gokhan Hulagu, Michael Mierkowski and Cem Pasaoglu. George Mason clocked a 6:46.83 and Old Dominion 6:50.27.
Action resumes tomorrow with trials at 10 a.m. Tomorrow's finals begin at 6 p.m. Final events include the men's and women's 500-freestyle relay, 200-individual medley, 50-freestyle and 400-medley relay. Finals will also be held in the men's one-meter diving event.
