Box Score

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The George Mason baseball team had trouble fielding the ball on Sunday afternoon against the University of Kentucky and those issues translated into a lot of unearned runs for the Wildcats as the Patriots lost for the second time this season, falling to Kentucky, 15-4 at Charleston, S.C.

Brent Hitz (0-1) was saddled with the first loss of his Mason career despite allowing just one earned run in four innings of work, while striking out six. Unfortunately, he also was charged with five unearned runs as Kentucky scored one in the first, three in the second and two in the fourth to chase the junior lefthander. Hitz had gone 6-0 last season, his first with Mason.

The Patriots found little relief in the relief pitching as Josh Morrison surrendered six runs in three innings, Brett Rembold gave up one run in the eighth and Jason Mills was tagged for two in the ninth. On the day, the Patriots committed six errors, bringing their season total to 11 errors in three games.

Kalen Gibson started for Kentucky, allowing just one run and two hits in three innings while Aaron Tennyson earned the win, pitching five innings in relief. Tennyson did not allow a run, until the eighth, his final inning of work.

The Patriots got their first two runs on home runs. Chris Fournier hit a homer for the second straight day, a solo shot in the first. Chris Looze added his first homer of the season, also a solo shot, this one in the eighth. Adam Innerst followed with a double and after a Robby Jacobsen single, Brett Pomykala drove Innerst home on a ground out.

Mason added another run in the ninth after Matt Cooksey walked and scored on a Looze double. The Patriots are in action again next weekend when they compete in a tournament at Wilmington, N.C. Games are scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
