Elon College, N.C.--George Mason University's softball team opened up its 2005 season earlier this afternoon at the Elon Tournament in North Carolina. The Patriots dropped a 9-1 decision to Akron and then fell to Campbell, 11-0. With this loss, Mason's overall record now stands at 0-2.
In the Patriots first game of the afternoon, senior shortstop Stacy James scored the lone run. James was brought across home plate after sophomore pitcher Megan Farrell hit her first double of the season. Farrell saw action on the mound the entire six innings against Akron.
In the second game, freshman hurler Amber Straube made her collegiate debut and pitched all five innings for the Patriots.
Mason will return to action on Feb. 19 in the second day of the three-day tournament. The Patriots will face host-school Elon at noon and will then compete against UMBC at 4 p.m.
