George Mason sent eight wrestlers to the prestigious Cliff Keen Las Vegas Wrestling Invitational Friday and Saturday, Dec. 2-3, which was held at the Cashman Center in Las Vegas, Nev. Mason finished the competition in 33rd place overall among the 52 schools with 20.0 points. Michigan won the meet for the second straight year with 145 points, while Cornell (116) placed second and Missouri (102.5) finished in third place.
Patriots' red-shirt freshman Will Powars began the tournament winning his first match at 133 pounds, a major decision 16-6, against Daniel Kerr from Dickinson State. He lost the second match, an 11-7 decision to Missouri's Tyler McCormick, who is ranked 18th by Wrestling Mall in the Round of 32. He posted a 4-2 overall mark, winning three straight in the wrestleback bracket before losing a close match to Seth Lisa from West Virginia, 3-2.
Sophomore 184-pounder Matt Moyer won his first two matches, recording falls in both, against Chris Angle from Cal Poly and Dillon Waggoner from Western State. In the Round of 16 he ran into No. 1 seed Pete Friedl out of Illinois, ranked fourth by Amateur Wrestling News and dropped a 16-6 decision. He went 1-1 in the wrestleback, defeating Elijah Simburger of Dickinson, 11-7.
Senior 197-pounder Joel Caruso lost his opening round match, but went 2-1 in wrestleback to finish 2-2. He recorded decisions against Orrin Kleinhenz of Columbia, 11-6, and Wesley Taylor of the University of Tennessee Chattanooga, 8-2 before losing a major decision to Purdue's Nate Moore currently ranked 17th by Amateur Wrestling News.
Tyler Tisdell wrestled at 165 pounds, finished with an even 2-2 record. He lost his opening round match to USAF Academy's Beau Tresemer, 4-2. He won two straight in wrestleback against Craig McIntosh of UNC Greensboro and John DeCeault of Purdue.
Junior Mitch Webster finished 1-2 in the 157-pound division. He posted a close 6-5 decision over Jake Friedman of North Idaho, but was downed in matches by Brian Stith of Arizona State, currently ranked 6th in Amateur Wrestling News and Joe Ellenberger of University of Nebraska Kearney.
Also in action over the weekend and posting 1-2 marks were Randy Oates and Robert Henry. Freshman Chris Cartella finished 0-2 overall at 141.
George Mason begins its dual meet season Saturday at home at John Linn Gymnasium against Delaware State (3 p.m.) and James Madison (7 p.m.).
