Fairfax, Virginia--Junior Tom Koucheravy (Fairfax, Va.) was named Colonial Athletic Association Male Swimmer of the Week for his outstanding performance at the Patriot Invitational held at the Aquatic & Fitness Center this past weekend. This is his second time being named Male Swimmer of the Week since his career began at Mason in the fall of 2003.
Koucheravy won three events during the Invitational also setting new school and meet records in each event: the 500-yard freestyle (4:22.79), the 200 freestyle (1:39.27), and the 1,650 freestyle (15:09.35). The former Robinson High School swimmer's times in the 500 free and 1,650 free are new NCAA `B' cuts, while his 1,000 free (9:11.47) and 1,650 free are new CAA records. Notably, Koucheravy's time in the 1,650 freestyle broke the pool record, which had been previously set by two-time Olympic Champion, Tom Dolan in December 1999, while training for the 2000 Olympic Trials in Fairfax.
"I was pleasantly surprised by Tom's performance," said Head Coach Peter Ward on Koucheravy's achievements. "His times were phenomenal. We didn't fully prepare with the proper rest that we normally would have before a championship meet where these times would have been our goal. This now allows us to focus our training for a more elite performance at the end of the year."
In addition to being named this weeks CAA Male Swimmer of the Week, Koucheravy has also been: CAA Men's Swimmer of the Year (2004-05), Outstanding Male Swimmer of the CAA Championships (2005), CAA Male Swimmer of the Week (Feb. 8, 2005), and CAA Rookie of the Year (2003-04).
