Swim Teams Compete at Potomac Relays

Fairfax, Va.--George Mason University's swim teams opened up their season at the Potomac Relays on Oct. 14 at Georgetown University. Seven teams competed on each side and Mason's men's team placed second with a score of 81, while the women finished in third (61 points).

On the men's side, six relay teams garnered second place finishes and the 1,000 freestyle relay team consisting of Tom Koucheravy (Jr.; Fairfax, Va.) and senior Tim Norton (Virginia Beach, Va.) placed first with a time of 9:41.02. The 800 freestyle relay team consisting of Koucheravy, Norton, junior B.J. Dufresne (Alexandria, Va.) and Matt McGillicuddy (Sr.; Fairfax, Va.) placed second with a time of 7:07.58. In addition, Matt Kane (So.; Chesterfield, Va.), junior Andrew Ryder (Blacksburg, Va.) and freshman Ross Redcay (West Lawn, Pa.) swam the 300 breaststroke relay in a time of 3:07.41 to finish in second.

For the women, the 200 yard medley relay team of Rebecca Jimenez (Jr.; Fairfax, Va.), junior Liz Ouzts (Newport News, Va.), freshman Morgan Hall (Alexandria, Va.) and Sarah Bizer (So.; Annandale, Va.) finished first with a time of 1:50.36, while the 300 yard backstroke team of Jimenez, Allie Smith (Fr. Winchester, Va.) and junior Justine Blaho (Macedon, N.Y.) placed second (3:04.00). Brooke Crowther (Jr.; Heathsville, Va.), Smith, Mallory Pucci (So.; Raleigh, N.C.) and freshman Katie Kelly (Sayville, N.Y.) were the 800 freestyle team and registered a third-place time of 7:57.94.

Navy claimed the women's title with 84 total points, while Boston College (83), Mason (61), American (60) and George Washington (39) rounded out the top-5 schools. GWU won on the men's side with 83 points, with Mason close behind (81) and American (80) finished in third.

Both teams open up their Colonial Athletic Association schedule as Mason hosts Delaware on Oct. 22.
