Richard Phillips didn't compete in the season-opening Father Diamond Invitational on January 15 but the senior hurdler did make his season debut on Saturday at the Patriot Games, and the 2004 Olympic semifinalist wasted no time qualifying for the IC4A Championships as he ran a time of 7.90 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles preliminaries. Phillips ran 7.93 in the finals to finish second to teammate Ricardo Melbourne, who finished in 7.91.

Phillips was not the only Mason athlete to qualify for a championship meet on Saturday. Teammate Marc Kellman, who qualified for the triple jump at the Father Diamond, qualified for the IC4A in the long jump as well. He was the top-finishing collegian with a distance of 7.17 meters. Teammate Ryan McCoy was just behind him with 6.96 meters. Sammy Sesay came as close as possible to joining them in the 60-meter dash. His time of 6.99 seconds was .01 off the qualifying time.

On the women's side, Sheena Davidson put her name on the list of athletes who will travel to Boston in March for the ECAC Championships. She ran the 800-meters in 2:13.79 to qualify, finishing as the top collegian in the event on Saturday. Her teammate, Fiana York, had qualified in that event two weeks ago. York was just behind Davidson with a time this week of 2:14.99.

Alycia Williams would have qualified for the 200-meter dash with her winning time of 25.05 but she had already done so at the Father Diamond. She and Shamekia Louis nearly added the 60-meter dash to their list of events at that meet. Louis won the event on Saturday with a time of 7.79 seconds while Williams was second in 7.80 seconds. The qualifying time that they were shooting for was 7.74 seconds. Also coming up just short was senior Paula Bailey in the 400-meters. Her first-place time of 57.63 seconds was .29 off the qualifying mark.

The Patriots who came up short will shoot again next weekend when they compete at the New York Armory.
