The 2005 indoor track and field season began for the George Mason men's and women's teams on Saturday afternoon as the Patriots hosted the Father Diamond Invitational. The meet was a success for seven Mason athletes who qualified for major late-season meets.

Sophomore Ryan McCoy and senior Marc Kellman each provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in the triple jump as they took the top two places, respectively. McCoy jumped 15.84 meters while Kellman leapt 15.71 meters. Both men also qualified for the IC4A Championships.

They weren't the only members of the men's team to qualify for the IC4A meet and provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships. Ricardo Melbourne ran the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 7.81 seconds, finishing first amongst all collegians. The only person to run faster than Melbourne on Saturday was his Jamaican countryman and Olympic finalist Maurice Wignall., who ran unattached and finished in 7.62 seconds. No one else broke the 8.0 second barrier.

Quentin Matthews will join his teammates in Boston for the IC4A Championships in March as he finished second in the high jump, clearing 2.10 meters. Teammate Wayne Wright was fourth in the event with a jump of 2.05 meters. The final member of the men's team to qualify for the IC4A was Ricardo Cunningham, as the senior ran the 1000-meters in 2:29.04, qualifying by less than one second.

Alycia Williams got off to a fast start for the women's team, as she qualified for the ECAC Championships in both the 200-meters and 500-meters. She was also part of the 4X400-meter relay team that qualified for that meet. She ran that race with Sheena Davidson, Misti Turner and Nichole Brown. Turner was fourth in the 60-meter dash behind teammate Shamekia Louis, who was third. Davidson finished second in the 200-meters, behind Williams, missing qualification for the ECAC meet by .16 seconds. Turner was fifth in the 200-meters.

Running in her first race for Mason, Fiana York qualified for the ECAC in the 800-meters, where she ran a time of 2:13.86. Davidson was fourth in that event. Other Mason women to finish in the top three included Paula Bailey, who was third in the 500-meters, Brown, who was third in the high jump and Louis, who was third in the long jump
