Mason's men's golf team opened its 2004 fall campaign this past weekend at the Navy Fall Invitational and placed 10th in a field of 20 teams. Action took place at the par 71, 6,611 yard USNA Golf Course in Annapolis with 18 holes played on Saturday and Sunday.
The Patriots found themselves tied for 12th place with the University of Delaware after the first day of competition, carding a 306. Mike Kirby (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) recorded a two-over par 37-36=73 and Mike Cavanagh (Perham, Minn./Hibbing) carded a four-over par 36-39=75 to lead the Patriots.
Mason managed to cut seven strokes off their first round total, carding a 299 on day two to jump into a 10th place finish. Each member of the team broke 80, with Cavanagh and Nick DeSimone (Sykesville, Md./Liberty) each finishing with a 73. Cavanagh's 148 total was good enough for the top 20, ranking 14th for the tournament.
Towson shot a 3-under par 281 in the final round of action to claim the Navy Fall Golf Invitational title. The Tigers were tied for fifth after the first round, but blew away the field on the final day of competition to win by eight strokes over Winthrop.
Individual medalist honors went to Saint Joseph's Sean Seese who turned in an Even 142 for the tournament. Seese entered the final round tied for second and just edged out William & Mary's Tim Pemberton (143, +1) who was the tournament leader after day one.
Mason will travel to Sunset Beach, N.C. to participate in the Elon/Sea Trail Intercollegiate September 24-26.
