Mason's men's tennis team began action this weekend at the Washington and Lee Invitational in Lexington, Va. against teams from Davidson College, CAA foe James Madison and host Washington and Lee.

Junior Stephan Dufils, who missed the spring tennis season because of injury, won his first round Flight 1 singles match in three sets, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 against Brad Stillwagon from Washington and Lee. Dufils lost his second round match in three sets to Porus Jetli of Davidson College, 2-6, 6-3, 1-6. He will play James Madison's John Snead on Sunday for third place.

The other six Patriots didn't fare as well, losing first round matches across the board. Senior Tim Bainton in Flight 1 singles bracket lost his first round match to David Sheay of Washington and Lee and consolation match to Russ Burns from Davidson. Eric Vogel lost his first two matches, each in two sets, to Jon Malooly of Washington and Lee and Bob Allensworth of James Madison in Flight 2.

Competing in Flight 3 action were Sophomore Nick Schapiro and Junior Miles Hughes, who each lost their first two matches and will compete on Sunday in the consolation match against each other. Flight 4 returned the same results for Mason, both Sophomores Rob Santos and Phu Le lost their first two matches and will face each other in the consolation match on Sunday.

Mason sent three doubles teams in the tournament. Bainton/Dufils played in Flight 1 and lost their opening match to Lusk/Kimmel of Washington and Lee, 8-3. In Flight 2 both the teams of Schapiro/Vogel and Hughes/Le lost their first round matches.
