Charlottesville, Va. - Vanderbilt got its first two runners of the game on base and it capitalized on a George Mason error by taking an early 2-0 lead against Patriots' starter Eric Gibbons. The Patriots were able to strike back for one run in the top of the third but Cesar Nicholas hit a solo homer in the bottom of the frame and the Commodores tacked on four runs in the bottom of the fifth and currently lead, 7-1 after five innings.

Vanderbilt's four-run inning came courtesy of three George Mason errors and that allowed three unearned runs to score in the frame.

The Patriots loaded the bases in the top of the third with nobody out but managed to score just once with the run coming on a wild pitch. Chris Looze struck out and the ball went to the backstop allowing Bruce Baldwin to score from third. Nick Shimer struck out and Adam Innerst flew out to left to end the threat.

The Patriots had runners on first and third with one out in the top of the first but Shimer and Innerst both struck out to allow Vanderbilt and starter Jeremy Sowers to escape the threat. Sowers is projected to be one of the top 10 picks in the nation in Monday's Major League Baseball Amateur Draft.
