FAIRFAX, Va. - The NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Advisory Committee has released its final official ranking for the spring, and George Mason finished 13th, same as last season. The Patriots ranked 182nd overall in the Golfweek/Sagarin national rankings released May 24. Mason was 174th in the latest GolfStat listings. Rankings are based on head-to-head competitions throughout the season. Golfweek/Sagarin ranked Mason 11th and GolfStat rated Mason 13th in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
Individually, Craig Mason (Lorton, VA/Hayfield) was the Patriots top golfer listed in the top 500, dropping in at 493 in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. He ended the season ranked 14th in the District I Mid-Atlantic Region. The senior led George Mason with a combined 73.1 stroke average over the fall and spring seasons, finishing in the top 5 in two of the 11 tournaments he entered. Mason was named to the Division I Golf Coaches Association of America/PING Mid-Atlantic All-Region team and was an All-Colonial Athletic Association first team member.
Sophomore teammate Mike Cavanagh ended the season ranked 26th in the District I Mid-Atlantic Region. He ranked second on team in scoring average with 74.1 strokes per round and finished in the Top 20 in six tournaments, with a career-best 3rd place finish at the Drew Upton Memorial, shooting (71-71-72) 214. The Minnesota native recorded a career-tying 69 in the final tournament of the season at the Rutherford Intercollegiate (69-70-76) 215, good for 12th place. He placed 17th in the CAA Tournament carding a (73-75-76) 224.
Golfweek Magazine has taken to publishing the Sagarin ratings of every school in the country. The ratings are basically a head-to-head rating against all the schools that a team faces. Golfstat has its own Head-to-Head rating which are similar to the Sagarin. Team rankings used to determine entrants into the NCAA Regional Tournaments are determined by a Regional Advisory Committee, and are also based on head-to-head competitions. The top four teams in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Committee rankings, of which George Mason is a member, get the Mid-Atlantic Region's NCAA bids.
