New Haven, Conn. -
The George Mason men's track and field team competed at the IC4A Championships at Yale last weekend and the Patriots nearly came home with the title, but instead, they had to settle for third place as Army took home the crown. The Patriots scored 48 total points while Army recorded 50. The deciding points came in and event where the two teams finished 1-2.
Marc Kellman finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 15.71 meters. He was just behind Jeff Weaver of Army, who leapt 15.78 meters. Those two extra points gave Army the title instead of Mason.
Kellman got plenty of help in the team's fight for the crown, none more than from Richard Phillips. The junior took home two titles, winning the 200-meters in a time of 20.92, and taking home the 110-meter hurdles crown in a time of 13.66 seconds. Ricardo Melbourne was second in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.94 seconds.
Also finishing second for the Patriots was Quentin Matthews, who jumped 2.10 meters in the high jump. Ryan McCoy was fifth in the triple jump, with a distance of 15.26 meters.
The Patriots are off for nearly two weeks before they compete at the NCAA East Regional in Gainesville, Fla. at the University of Florida. That meet begins on Friday, May 28.
