Baltimore, Md. - The UMBC (15-34, 6-12 AE) baseball team lost 9-5 to
George Mason (35-14, 19-3 CAA) in non-conference baseball action on
Wednesday night at The Baseball Factory Field at UMBC. George Mason hit
four homeruns resulting in seven runs en route to the victory.
Retriever starter Mike Johnson threw 5.2 innings of solid baseball
despite a couple of mistakes that led to homeruns in the first, fifth
and sixth inning. Johnson allowed seven runs on seven hits and struck
out nine taking the loss and falling 0-2 on the year.
The Patriots in the first scored two runs as Chris Looze hit a two-run shot over the right field fence. The Patriots added a third run in the
top of the second and held a 3-2 lead after two as UMBC scored single
runs in the opening two innings.
In the first the Retrievers loaded the bases as Dan Carpenter reached on
an error allowing Zach Clark, who opened the game with a single, to
score from third. In the second Jon Gossard recorded an RBI single to
plate Chris Becraft.
The two teams flip-flopped leads through the fourth and fifth innings as
UMBC took a 4-3 advantage with two runs in the bottom of the fourth
while the Patriots regained the lead in the top of the fifth with two runs.
The Retrievers recorded runs on Gossards' second RBI single of the game
and an RBI double by Kyle Wildasin. The Patriots responded with a
two-run homerun by Nick Shimer in the top half of the fifth.
The game stood tied at 5-5 after the fifth as Bryan Owens scored for the
Retrievers as Jack Saffron reached on a fielder's choice.
The Patriots scored the final four runs of the game as Robby Jacobsen
broke the tie with a solo homerun in the top of the sixth and Looze, who
went 3-for-4 in the game with three runs scored and four RBI, hit his
second two-run homerun of the game in the top of the ninth for insurance.
Jake Glanzmann captured the win going 5.0 innings allowing five runs on
five hits. Glanzmann moves to 4-0 on the year. Josh Morrison and Jason
Mills finished the game allowing no runs over the final 4.0 innings.
Gossard led the way for UMBC going 4-for-5 from the plate with two RBI.
Zach Clark was 1-for-4 with two runs scored and Kyle Wildasin went
1-for-4 with an RBI.
UMBC returns to action for the final three games of the season as they
host Maine for a three-game series starting Friday at 1 p.m. The
Retrievers will play a nine and seven-inning doubleheader on Friday and
nine-inning game in their season finale at 12 p.m. on Saturday at home.
